Study Claims Apple’s Anti-Tracking Feature Is A Dud

One of the features that Apple tree introduced earlier this year as part of an iOS 14 update is App Tracking Transparency. Basically, it's a feature meant to requite users the choice of whether or not they want an app to track them. Obviously when y'all put it that way, nearly users would cull to opt out.

This was something that companies like Facebook took great issue with. Nonetheless, it turns out that maybe these companies might not need to exist then worried after all. In a study by Lockdown Privacy that was initially picked up by The Washington Post, it seems to propose that the anti-tracking feature built into iOS is kind of a dud.

Co-ordinate to the study, the researchers studied over a course of five months the summit 10 apps in the App Shop to encounter if the characteristic actually stops tracking like it claims.

"Using the open source Lockdown Privacy app and transmission testing, nosotros institute that App Tracking Transparency fabricated no difference in the total number of active third-political party trackers, and had a minimal bear upon on the total number of third-party tracking connection attempts. We farther confirmed that detailed personal or device information was beingness sent to trackers in almost all cases. ATT was functionally useless in stopping third-party tracking, even when users explicitly choose 'Ask App Not To Rail'."

The study even goes on to advise that the feature might actually be dangerous because information technology could lull users into a false sense of security as they call back that their privacy is beingness protected. They claim that the flaw of the feature is that it relies on the "award system" and that it's up to developers to be honest. Still, if developers see that other developers are lying, they have no incentive to be forthcoming either.

Apple has since responded to the study where co-ordinate to spokesman Fred Sainz, "Apple believes that tracking should be transparent to users and under their control. If we find that a developer is not honoring the user'southward choice, we volition work with the developer to address the effect, or they will exist removed from the App Store."
